AUC 362/EIFS Flashcards
EIFS is exterior wall covering system that uses layered insulation and waterproofing finish..
can be found on commercial, pd, combustible, non combustible, etc.
EIFS 3 layers:
innermost-insulation layer (foam plastic insulation )
middle-reinforcing fiberglass mesh
outermost-finish coat layer (usually cement based polymer )
-GLUED or mechanically fastened
component of PRIMARY CONCERN during firefighting ops is
INNERMOST SHEATHING OF FOAM PLASTIC INSULATION –combustible , essentials thermoplastic ((1/4” to 8” thick)–hEAT RATE RELEAS 3-5 TIMES HIGHER than ordinary combustibles, such as wood or paper–if FPI is ignited, expect high heat , rapid flame spread and DENSE BLACK SMOKE
EIFS buildings are especially vulnerable to adjacent outside fires (car rubbish, etc.) and ignition sources during construction phase (portable heater, salamanders, torches, etc.)
additionally , an interior fire venting out windows and doors exposing a combustible exterior wall assembly can extend rapidly consuming the exterior combustible assembly ..fire in exterior wall assembly can required significant resources to control
RAPIDITY OF FIRE SPREAD is dependent on the THICKNESS OF THE FINISH COAT LAYER , thickness of the innermost layer (FPI) and integrity of EFIS INSTALLATION.
EIFS FIRS OFTEN EXTEND VIA A POORLY MAINTAINED OR DAMAGED FINISH COAT LAYER
-and advance cladding fire can further expose the contents and structural components in the interior of the building
aesthetic design of EIFS finish coat layer makes it look like other types of building materials ..
WOOD FRAME STRUCTURE CALD IN EIFS can resemble brick/masonry building, this can make size up difficult
energy efficient insulating properties of EIFS are designed to prevent heat from escaping the building..
these same properties can adversely affect firefighting, increasing FLASHOVER POTENTIAL/EIFS CLADDING ALONG WITH ENERGY EFFICIENT WINDOWS MAY CON\CEAL EVIDENCE OF FIRE
ONCE FIRE penetrates the FINISH COAT LAYER , FOAM INSULATION CAN IGNITE AND RAPIDLY SPREAD
AS FIRE CONTINUES TO IGNITE ESCAPING MATERIAL , RESULTS IN FLAMMABLE LIQUID FIRE
FIRST ARRIVING ENGINE consider DECK GUN
INITIAL HANDLINES POSITIONED FOR INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR ATTACK
-when conditions dictate , handline dedicated to exterior , number of lengths should cove all sides of building, size of line will depend on fire extent and size of building
BUILDING 3 STORIES OR HIGHER, OR A LARGE AREA BUIDLING MAY REQUIRE 2 1/2’LINE , 1 3/4 MAY BE SUFFICIENT FOR SMALLER PD
ALL EIFS BUILDINGS ENTERED IN CIDS
SPECIFIC LOCATION OUTLINED (EXPOSURE 2 SIDE )
UPON TRANSMISSION OF 10-75 FOR FIRE IN EIFS BUILDING..
additional engine and ladder shall be SPECIAL CALLED…TOWER LADDER IF ONE IS NOT ASSIGNED ON INITIAL ALARM
EXTERIOR STREAM OPTIONS:
TL-100 PSI/135’
ENGINE DECK GUN-100 PSI /130 FEET
A 2 1/2” with cockloft nozzle can be used to apply water to an exterior fire that is above reach of stream.
-fires in combustible wall assemblies can produce significant fire and may require large water flows to overcome heat release rate of the fire.
- one tip of cockloft nozzle capped with 1 1/2” shut off
- -vertical reach of up to 2 floors
- 3 feet from window sill operated at slight angle toward the building
- additional l cockloft nozzles deployed as necessary
