Atypical Anti-psychotics (exam 2) Flashcards
Less selective to D2 receptor, more selective to D4; blocks 5HT receptors as well
1
Q
Clozapine (clozaril)
A
- Blocks D4, in addition to D2
- lowest extrapyramidal toxicity of all antipsychotics
- may cause agranulocytosis (high fatality)
- weight gain, sedation, tachycardia, hypotension
2
Q
Risperidone (risperdal)
A
-higher chance of extrapyramidal effects, but no agranulocytosis
3
Q
Olanzapine (zyprexa)
A
- less chance of extrapyramidal effects or elevated prolactin, low chance of agranulocytosis
- weight gain common, as is sedation
4
Q
Quetiapine (seroquel)
A
- anti-adrenergic effects
- larger risk of tachycardia and hypotension
- weight gain
5
Q
Aripiprazole (abilify)
A
- partial agonist activity for D2 and 5HT1A receptors
- less likely cause of weight gain
