Q

What is your greatest non-academic achievement

A

Situation
-Performing dance performances much more confidently
-Used to really dislike dance
-Hated performing
-Performances brought about a lot of anxiety and stress

Task
-As I got older and started enjoying dance more, the fear and stress surrounding performing didn’t stop
-Had to evaluate the reasons
-Feeling unprepared, self conscious, inexperienced (performance only happened once or twice per year)

Action
-Regular practice
-Scaling up, bite size pieces
-Initially performed to family, then to class, then in smaller and familiar events
-Fake it till you make it (when practicing, always practice with smile and confidence as if on stage)
-Got help from my dance teacher, voiced my concerns, she provided lots more opportunities for performances to try and help

Result
-Still feel nerves on stage, but not overwhelming
-Manageable and normal level of stress
-I’m able to enjoy the process of learning and performing dance a lot more
-Really rewarding to hear people saying they can see my enjoyment of dance shining thru in my performances now!

Reflection
-Taught me the importance of self reflection, and helped me develop a desire for constant self improvement
-It’s a quality I think is vital for a medical career as the GMC good medical practice outlines need to constantly better your knowledge and skills
-Whole learning experience improved my confidence which is necessary in a medical field to empower patients to make decisions and feel less anxious

Q

How do you manage stress?

A

-appreciate that stress normal
-excessive stress can be damaging to your heal and suggest an underlying root issue
-so important to understand and try to minimise it

-planning out a general schedule for my week helps
-ensuring I’m scheduling in down time where I’m able to participate in my hobbies such as baking and dance
-find dance really helps me refocus as it provides a change of setting, people, and actual task
-also maintaining some sort of routine everyday, whether that be working out every evening or maybe going on a walk in the afternoon gives me some time to reflect and destress

-sometimes, it is necessary to reach out
-depending on the cause of my stress that may involve talking to a teacher about my worries in school
-or reaching out to my close friends or family
-they provide a strong sense of support for me an help me stay grounded

-it’s important to be aware of stress, what causes it and what helps you personally deal with stress as it can vary from person to person
-in the medical field, knowing how to cope with stress and appreciating when you need to reach out to get help is important as I know it can be demanding
-so I hope to carry these habits into the future, adapting them and utilising them when needed

Q

Can you provide us with an example of a time when you demonstrated resilience?

A

I once had a drama performance
Was my first performance in front a paying audience
Relatively larger audience than I’d ever performed for
Also never acted in front of people, only danced
So altogether, daunting and nerve wracking experienced

Had to demonstrate resilience in multiple ways
Initially combatting nerves before performing
Deep breathing exercises, positive affirmations and dress rehearsal helped

On stage, at one point I forgot my lines
Terrifying
Experienced fight or flight
Quickly returned to those calming down exercises
Took a deep breath in, retraced my lines
Continued

Whilst it felt like the end of the world, it wasn’t
Provided me with a good learning experience

Resilience is important in medicine, as it is a long journey to becoming a doctor
You will encounter challenges and make mistakes, what you do is more important

Q

Give us an example of a time when you demonstrated teamwork.

A

Mencap

Plan for activities each week
Come to decisions as a group
Working together for others

Once in a while, we plan something more special or different
For example we had a games night where we brought in a variety of new games and activities and wanted to plan a fun night which all the member could enjoy

All the volunteers came together to discuss a plan for the day
Everyone giving their own input
Highlighted necessity in listening and appreciating others viewpoints
For example, longest volunteer gave valuable insights in what games each members would enjoy or not enjoy
Delegating tasks, for the night
Each member was assigned to a game

I took leadership in the karaoke

Really rewarding experience to see how collectively we were able to plan an event which all the members truly enjoyed

Reflected MDTs in healthcare, together they create a significant impact
Importance of all members
Communication and active listening skills, alongside taking on responsibilities and leadership, appreciating everyone’s strengths and weaknesses

Q

Describe a time you showed commitment

A

Indian Classical dance called Kathak
have done it from a young age
provides a positive outlet for me at the end of the week helps me refocus and refresh my mind

preparing for student show
-not only commit by ensuring i was doing regular practice and showing up on time
-as one of the older students, i had to take on more responsibilities ensuring others in my class understood everything

-balancing waws difficult as it was a busy period but timetabling really helped

-i know medicine requires a lot of commitments
-eg commitment to lifelong learning and commitment to providing high quality of care for patients
-as its something i enjoy, similar to dance, i believe i’ll be able to develop commitment in similar ways
