Define attitude
Attitudes are beliefs, feelings and behaviours linked to an attitude object
Define positive attitude
are important in giving motivation and persistence in the task
Define negative attitude
can cause a lack of effort and effect team cohesion
What’s the four ways attitudes can be developed
- past experiences
- social learning
- conditioning
- familiarity
Define prejudice
an attitude, usually negative towards an individual based solely on their membership of a particular social group.
Define stereotype
a belief or generalisation about individuals based on their group
Explain the effective component
(feeling)
A persons feelings or emotional response to something
eg I enjoy sports because it makes me feel good
Explain the behavioural component
a persons actions and behaviour to something
eg I train twice a week
Explain the cognitive component
(knowledge)
A persons belief and knowledge about something
eg I believe exercise is good for me because I keep fit.
What are the two main ways of changing attitudes
- Persuasive communication
- cognitive dissonance
Explain persuasive communication
involves changing an attitude by applying verbal persuasion
What are the four factors of persuasive communication
- status of the messenger
- relevance of message
- the recipient (their willingness)
- situation / time the message is given
Explain cognitive dissonance
by changing one attitude component, the whole negative attitude can be converted into positive. CD creates conflict between one or more components of the triadic model
