Attitudes Flashcards
What is an attitude?
A learnt evaluation of a person, object, event or idea that can affect an individuals behaviour
What are the 2 functions of attitudes
- Explicit attitudes
- Implicit attitudes
What are the 3 components of the tripartite model?
- Affective (feelings and emotions)
- Behavioural (past and future activity)
- Cognitive (thoughts and beliefs)
What are explicit attitudes? Give an example
Where people openly state their attitude and behave in a way that reflects this attitude.
eg:
Attitude: Excersise is good for my health
Action: Go to the gym
What are implicit attitudes? Give an example
Involuntary, uncontrollable and sometimes unconscious. It is possible for individuals to be unaware that they hold a particular attitude until their actions reveal it.
eg:
Attitude: Moths are harmless
Action: Freak out when they see a moth
Explain the affective component of the tripartite model
The feelings and emotions about the attitude
Explain the behavioural component of the tripartite model
Actions, how our attitudes influencehow we act and behave
Explain the cognitive component of the tripartite model
Thoughts – our beliefs and knowledge about the attitude object
What 3 things are attitudes develop from?
- Direct experiences
- Social norms
- Observing others
What is consistency between components?
Suggests that the tripartite model needs all three components for an attitude can exist
What is the inconsistency between components?
Sometimes a persons behaviour doesn’t always reflect the attitude they hold
