Attitude =
A value aimed at an attitude object.
Socialisation (attitude formation )
Process where cultural values are learnt by associating with others
How may attitudes be formed
They are formed from significant others when information is repeated or reinforced.
How can praise from player to coach be negative
If player is praised for negative behaviour , such as diving in football, they may develop negative attitudes
Triadic model (CAB)
The three parts of an attitude: cognitive, affective and behavioural
Cognitive component (triadic model)
A belief, such as the belief in the ability to win.
Affective component
Relates to feelings and interpretation such as enjoyment
Behavioural component
Actions of the performer
Cognitive dissonance
New information given to the performer to cause unease and motivate change. Creates a conflict in thinking that leads to lack of harmony and unease.
Persuasion
An effective communication to promote change
3 things that persuasive communication needs to have
- communication needs to be relevant and important.
- giver of message needs to be of high status, perhaps a role model.
- timing is important, maybe after a loss or poor performance.
