Attention (Chap 5) Flashcards
Divided Attention
behavioral and cognitive process of selectively concentrating on one aspect of the environment while ignoring other things
Attention
taking into possession of the mind. focalisation, concentration.
Selective attention/focused attention
Situation in which one source of info is attended to at a time while other stimuli are ignored
Broadbent’s early model of filter attention (selective attention model)
Attended info input + unattended info input ===> sensory store ====> selective filter based on physical properties === bottle neck===> higher level processing ==> WM
Triesman’s attentuation theory?
Argued that the selective filter could be better thought of as an attentuator –> information still gets through
Deutsch & Deutsch
argued that all information processed at semantic level and only some information selected for response
Evidence against Broadbent’s model?
Stroop task
Posner Task
- Michael Posner
- The task assesses an individual’s ability to perform an attentional shift.
Attentional Shift
directing attention to a point to increase the efficiency of processing that point and includes inhibition to decrease attentional resources to unwanted or irrelevant inputs
