Attention Flashcards
What is attention?
Mind gives consideration to one object or idea and withdraws from other
- Involves focus, concentration, & consciousness
What are the features of attention?
-Selective
-Divided
- Limited capacity
- Interference
- Mental effort
What is selective attention?
Ability to allocate limited resource to different tasks
What is intentional selection?
Purposefully attending to one source while inhibiting attention to others
What is involuntary capture of attention?
Usually in response to external stimuli
What are the 2 conditions of the Stroop Effect?
1) Neutral word have participate name color of print
2) Color word have participant name color of print
According to the Stroop effect what does congruent vs incongruent words and print correlate to time?
- Congruent words have a quicker timed trial
- Incongruent have slower timed trials
According to the Stroop effect what does it support irrelevant information interferes with?
Intention
What evidence does the Stroop effect give in regards to processing?
Parallel processing occurs early in the stages of information processing
What is dichotic listening?
Two messages simultaneously
How is the Cocktail Party Problem performed?
- Two messages simultaneously and listener is asked to shadow a message
What is the results of the Cocktail party problem?
Some unattended stimuli processed in parallel with attended stimuli during early stimulus identification
What is inattention blindness?
Failure to see certain stimuli when engaged in specific search task
What is change blindness?
Intentionally processing specific visual information led to inability to process other visual stimuli
What limitations in selective attention did stroop effect and cocktail party effect prove?
Some irrelevant stimuli processed in parallel
Why can selective attention come at a cost?
Inattention blindness
What is interference?
Decreased ability to simultaneously perform two tasks
What is structural interference?
There is a physical reason you can not perform two tasks
What is capacity interference?
The demands of attention for the 2 tasks are more than you are capable of giving
Controlled (conscious) Processing
- Slow or fast?
- Attention demanding or not?
- Serial or parallel?
- Volitional or not?
- Slow
- Attention demanding
- Serial
- Volitional
Automatic (unconscious) Processing?
- Slow or fast?
- Attention demanding or not?
- Serial or parallel?
- Volitional or not?
- Fast
- Not attention demanding
- Parallel
- Not volitional
