> attachment: types of attachment Flashcards
what method did they use to measure the quality of relationships?
-Ainsworth developed a reliable method of measuring quality of attachments in 1-2 year olds
-called strange situation
-from these behaviours observed children were labelled with having a secure/insecure attachment
outline the procedure of the investigation:
-mum + infant go into room to get used to it before obs. begins
-mum is in the room + stranger enters
-mum leaves + stranger interacts with infant
-mum returns (reunion behaviour recorded)
-mum leaves + infant is left alone (separation protest recorded)
-instead of mum, stranger returns + (stranger anxiety behaviour recorded)
-mum re-enters + stranger leaves, reunion behaviour recorded
what did the observers note?
-childs willingness to explore
-separation anxiety
-stranger anxiety
-reunion behaviour
how did they record the observations?
-using a tape, time intervals of 15 seconds
-placed into behavioural categories -> proximity + contact seeking, contact maintaining, proximity + interaction avoiding, proximity + interaction resisting + searching
-with intensity level up to 7
what do the categories allow for?
-observers to focus solely on babies behaviours eg smiling, cooing
-more reliable
what 3 main attachment styles did Ainsworth identify?
-secure, B
-insecure avoidant, A
-insecure resistant/ambient, C
what is the 4th attachment style later discovered?
disorganised
