secure = a positive view of self and other, confident.
ambivalent and avoidant attachment
ambivalent = neediness, clingy, negative view of self and positive view of other
avoidant = self reliance, fear of intimacy, sensitivity to rejection. positive view of self and negative of other
how early does attachment develop?
formed in intimacy with their parents
how do parental behaviors influence attachment?
attatchment relationships formed in infancy and childhood are largely stable into adulthood
how stable is attachment?
very stable however can change (especially through therapy)
how does attachment impact later relationships?
associated with relationship health and stability
triangular theory
love has three components : intimacy, passion, and commitment. Most relationships only have one or two, all three is rare
romantic vs companionate love
romantic - combination of intimacy and passion. not only drawn to each other physically but emotionally as well
companionate - intimacy and commitment. essential in long term relationships and friendships in which physical attractiveness has died down
potential relationship between intimacy and passion
passion is a function of change in intimacy – passion will be low when intimacy is stable, but rising intimacy will create strong sense of passion
self expansion model
our self concept expans to include characteristics, perspectives and resources of relational partner. increased self efficacy and increased self esteem
self efficacy
belief in one’s own ability to accomplish goals
love and visual attention
people in relationships turn their attention away from attractive people, as it can be a threat to their relationship
arranged vs love marriage
some cultures prefer an arranged marriage. (India) through study, there are less divorces with arranged marriages compared to love marriages. men reported greater amounts of commitment
