What is attachment ?
Attachment is a strong, lasting emotional bond formed between the baby and the main caregiver
What is an attachment figure ?
It is a caregiver who looks after a baby for long periods of time, responds when they are hungry and need comforting to make them feel safe
Who can attachment only be referred to ?
It can be referred to the close relationship between the caregiver and babies in early chilldhood
What are three behaviours which indicate a baby has a strong attachment to an attachment figure ?
Safe base behaviour, seperation anxiety and stranger anxiety
What is safe base behaviour ?
this is when children treat their caregiver as someone they can quickly return to when they are sad or anxious.
What will a baby do who perceives a caregiver as a safe house ?
When the baby is exploring and feels scared or anxoius they will return to the care giver for comfort
What is seperation anxiety ?
seperation anxiety is when a child becomes distressed when they are seperated from their attachment figure
Who can only comort the child when it experiences stranger anxiety ?
Only the caregiver can comfort them, others cannot
What is stranger anxiety ?
SA is when a child displays distress in the presence of unfamiliar people. The child would prefer company of the attachment figure
What does strangers make it seem to babies when they try to interact with them ?
the strangers will make it seem dangerous
