Atrial Rhythms Flashcards
what is a PAC?
premature atrial contraction, event not a rhythm
causes of PAC
stress, nicotine, caffeine, alcohol, hypoxia, fever, hypokalemia, COPD, heart disease
PAC treatment
monitor, notify doc if more than 6/min
where does the impulse originate in A-fib?
multiple random places in the atria
when is a-fib considered uncontrolled?
HR over 100
causes of a-fib
heart disease/surgery, COPD, electrolyte imbalances, fever
a-fib treatment - rate control
vagal maneuvers, diltiazem (Ca channel blocker)
diltiazem assessment
BP, HR, O2, ask about chest pain
a-fib treatment - rhythm control
amiodarone, cardioversion
amiodarone assessment
monitor BP, rate, rhythm, O2, ask about chest pain
amiodarone side effects
prolonged QT, cough, can cause renal/liver damage
what must you do before hitting shock when cardioverting?
make sure sync mode is on, sedate patient, remove medication patches, low energy, all clear
causes of SVT
stress, nicotine, caffeine, alcohol, heart disease, COPD
SVT treatment
vagal maneuvers, Ca channel/beta blockers, cardioversion, adenosine
how is adenosine given? dose?
6 mg rapid push & flush, then 12 if unsuccessful
