Atoms/Periodic Table Flashcards
What is the 3 subatomic particles that is found in an atom?
Protons, Neutrons and Electrons
Charges for each subatomic particle that is found in an atom
Proton- Positive
Neutron- Neutral
Electron- Negative
Where can the subatomic particles be found in an atom?
Protons and Neutrons can be found in the nucleus while the electrons can be found in the shell.
What is an compound?
A compound is a substance containing atoms of two or more elements joined together by chemical bonds.
What is a mixture?
A compound made up of two or more chemical components that are not chemically linked.
Difference between compound and mixture.
Compounds cannot be physically divided into different substances, Mixtures can.
Compounds are pure substances. Mixtures are not.
Difference between element and compound.
Element is made up of only one type of atom, compounds are made by two or more atoms.
Properties of Metals
Malleable, Ductile, Good conductors of heat and electricity, Melts at high temperature, Solid at room temperature
Properties of Non metals
Brittle, Cannot be bent into shape, Melts at low temperatures, Poor conductors of electricity, Cannot be polished to give a shine like metals
Electrons in the same period have the same…?
Number of shells
Electrons in the same group have the same…?
Valence electrons
Why is salt water a mixture not a compound?
It is a mixture because it is made up of salt and water, mixed physically.
Represent pure elements, compounds and mixture using diagrams
