what is alpha radiation?

A

Alpha particles have two protons and two neutrons and are relatively big and heavy and slow moving. They don’t penetrate very far into materials, because of their size they are strongly ionising which means the y bash into atoms a lot. In the equation it loses 4, loses 2

what is beta radiation?

A

Beta particles move quite fast and are quite small they penetrate moderate materials before colliding and have long range in the air. For every beta particle emitted a neutron turns into a proton in the nucleus

what is gamma radiation?

A

Gamma particles are fast and very small and are the most dangerous as they penetrate materials easily without being stopped, this means that they are weakly ionising but eventually hit something and do damage

how does radiation harm living cells?

A

Alpha, beta and gamma radiation can enter living cells and ionises the molecules changing and destroying them so that they no longer work this can cause cancer and other radiation sickness

  1. Short time and minimum exposure
  2. No contact with skin
  3. Point source away and don’t look directly at it
