Atoms Flashcards
Protons
Positive, in Nucleus. =atomic #
Neutrons
Neutral, in Nucleus (protons+ neutrons = atomic mass [below element letters])
Electrons
outside of neutron, make up energy clous. Negative
How do you determine how many of each particle there is in each atom?
compound, how many protons and neutrons
Isotope
varies atomic mass. varying # of neutrons
Ion
atom that has a charge. varying # of electrons. positive or negative. Electrons can vary, protons cannot.
Where are metal, metalloids and non-mettals located?
Metals- first few groups (about 1-13
Non-metals- about 14-18
Metalloids- about 13-17
alkali metals?
group 1, very reactive
Earth metals?
group 2, reactive
Noble Gasses?
group 18, not reactive. outside ring is full.
halogens?
group 17, reactive
How many of each atom is found in compounds? Determine how many protons and electrons make what charge?
MATTHHHH!!!!
Compounds: like exponents
Protons= positive #s, Electrons= negative #s ad them!!!! 4 protons+ 5 electrons = -1 charge
Transition elements
groups 3-16
Period
go left to right, go by atomic number
Group
go down, similar properties
