Atomic Structure Flashcards
What does an atom have to have the same number of to be the same element?
Protons
Why do we use protons to define elements?
Unlike electrons and neutrons they are not easily lost/changeable
When you move across a period, what does the atomic number increase by?
1
What is the relative mass of an electron?
1/1836
Why do we not include the weight of electrons in the RAM?
It is insignificantly small in mass
What is an isotope?
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons
Since isotopes have the same number of electrons, what are they?
Chemically identical
What determines the chemical properties of an atom?
Electrons
How do you work out the number of neutrons in an atom?
Mass number - Atomic number
What does RAM stand for?
Relative Atomic Mass
How do you work out the RAM if there are isotopes?
Multiply each isotopic mass by the abundance
Add together
Divide by the sum of the relative abundances
As the energy levels get further from the nucleus what do they get?
Higher energy
What energy level can actually hold more than 8 electrons?
The third level
What do group ones electron configuration have in common?
1 electron in outer energy level
How does the group number correspond to the number of electrons in the atoms outer shell?
It equals the amount in the outer shell (0= full energy shell)
