Atomic structure - 3.2 Flashcards
1
Q
What does the term atomic number mean?
A
the number of protons
2
Q
What does the term mass number mean?
A
the total number of protons and neutrons
3
Q
What is an isotope?
A
isotopes are atoms with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons
4
Q
What is relative atomic mass?
A
RAM is the average mass of an atom of an element, taking into account the different masses of each isotope.
5
Q
How is RAM calculated?
A
(mass number x %-abundance) + (mass number x %-abundance) divided by 100
6
Q
What does the location of an element on the periodic table say?
A
row = period = number of occupied electron shells
column = group = number of electrons in the outer-shell
