Atomic structure Flashcards
What are the 3 subatomic particles?
- protons
- neutrons
- electrons
What is the relative charge and mass of a proton?
relative charge = +1
relative mass = 1
What is the relative charge and mass of a neutron?
relative charge = 0
relative mass = 1
What is the relative charge and mass of an electron?
relative charge = -1
relative mass = very small, negligeable
Where are the 3 subatomic particles found?
The protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus, and electrons orbit it.
What is the overall charge of an atom and why?
Atoms have no overall charge because the amount of positive protons are equal to the amount of negative elctrons
What is the mass number?
The number of protons and neutrons in total; the mass of the nucleus
What is the atomic number?
The amount of protons
What is an isotope?
Atoms of the same element that can have different numbers of neutrons
How are electrons arranged?
Arranged in energy levels (shells). The lowest energy level (shell) can hold a maximum of 2 electrons, the second can hold 8 and the third can hold 8
What do electrons occupy?
The lowest available energy level
How can the electronic structure be shown and an example?
Can be shown as a diagram or as numbers. Eg for sodium that has 11 electrons, the electronic structure is 2,8,1
