Metals Flashcards
Where are metals found on the priodic table?
Found in the centre of the periodic table and to the left and bottom of the periodic table
What do metals form when they react?
Positive ions
How are the atoms arranged in metals?
Closely packed together in regular layers
What are the elctrons like in the outer shell of a metal?
What does this create?
Delocalised and are free to move throughout the metallic lattice. This creates strong metallic bonding
What two things do most metals have?
- High melting points
- High boiling points
What can metals do and why?
Can be bent and shaped as the layers of atoms can slide over each other
What are alloys?
Mixtures of a metal with other elements
Are alloys harder or softer than pure metals and why?
Harder as the layers are distorted and cannot slide
Are metals good conductors of electricity and why?
The delocalised electrons move through the structure
Are metals good conductors of heat and why?
The delocalised electrons can transfer the thermal energy
