Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is an atom?
An atom is the smallest component of an element that can exist and still have the same chemical properties as the element
What is atomic number?
Atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus of one atom of an element
What is mass number?
Mass number is the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of one atom of an element
What is an electrostatic force of attraction?
electrostatic force of attraction is the force that exists between two oppositely charged particles.
What is electronic configuration?
The electronic configuration of an atom is the arrangement of electrons in the energy shell of the atom
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are different atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons and electrons but different numbers of neutrons
What is isotopy?
isotopy is the occurence of atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons and electrons but different numbers of neutrons.
Define relative atomic mass. Ar
Relative atomic mass is the average mass of one atom of an element compared to one-twelfth the mass of an atom of carbon-12.
What is a radioactive isotope?
Isotopes with unstable nuclei is known as radioactive isotopes.
