Atomic Structure Flashcards
Define mass number, atomic number and IE
Mass- number of protons and neutrons
Atomic- number of protons
IE- the amount of energy required to remove a mole of electrons from a mole of atoms in a gas state.
The mass spectrometer
Acceleration- positive ions are attracted to negatively charged plate. Once accelerated all ions have the same kinetic energy
Ion drift- different speeds mean they separate.
Detection- ion hits the detector and gains an electron- generating a current promotional to the abundance of each ion
Describe electron impact
High energy electrons fired from an electron gun, knock of 1 electron from each particle producing a positive ion
Electronspary
Sample is dissolved in volatile solvent
Passed through a thin needle with a high positive voltage
Each particle gains a proton to form a positive ion
