Atomic Structure Flashcards
What are electrons? Where are the located? What’s their mass?
Negatively charged particles that spin around the positive centre of the atom in circles called energy levels with a mass of 0
What are protons? Where are they located? What is their mass?
Protons are positively charged particles in the nucleus of the atom with a mass of 1 amu
What are neutrons? Where are they located? What is their mass?
Neutrons don’t have a charge or are neutrally charged particles in the nucleus of an atom they have a mass of 1 amu
Group 1 of the periodic table name? Metal or nonmetal? And reactivity?
Alkali metals are soft metals with low density that react very fast (rapidly) with water. Getting more reactive as you go down the group.
Group 2 of the periodic table name? Metal/nonmetal? Reactivity?
Alkaline earth metals. Metals that are slightly less reactive, denser and harder than group one.
Group 7 of the periodic table name? Metal/nonmetal? Reactivity?Atomic structure?
Halogens Mixture of solid goods and gases that exist as diatomic molecules (have 2 atoms in each Molecule) as you go down the Group halogens become less reactive.
Groups 0 name? Reactivity? Atomic structure?
Noble gases are very unreactive and exist as individual atoms (monatomic)
What is the atomic number?
Tells you how many protons that element has.
What’s the mass number?
The number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms with the same atomic number but different mass numbers.
