Atomic structure Flashcards
What is all matter made up of?
Small particles called Atoms
What are atoms comprised of?
Subatomic particles
What are the three subatomic particles?
Protons
Electrons
Neutrons
What are elements?
- atoms of the same kind
cannot be broken down into/more substances by chemical means - listed on the periodic table of elects
- some elements exist as diatomic molecules
What are diatomic elements?
Two atoms of the same element
Name all the diatomic elements?
O2 - Oxygen H2 - Hydrogen N2 - Nitrogen F2 - Fluorine Cl2 - Chlorine Br2 - Bromine I2 - Iodine
What is a compound?
- consists of 2 or more elements that are chemically bonded together
- 2 or more elements can be broken down by chemical means
> heating & electrolysis
Can form molecules or crystal lattices
What is a chemical bond?
A force that holds atoms together
What is a molecule?
A cluster of atoms that are chemically bonded in a certain way
If the group of atoms are ALL THE SAME what do we call it?
A molecule of an element
If the group of atoms are ALL DIFFERENT what do we call it?
A molecule of a compound
What is a crystal lattice?
A compound that consists of many atoms, which are always combined in a fixed ratio
What type of charge does a proton have?
positive
What type of charge does a neutron have?
neutral
What type of charge does an electron have?
negative
