Pathology of atherosclerosis
- Endothelial dysfunction
- Accumulation of lipoproteins
- Monocyte adhesion to endothelium
- Factor release
- Smooth muscle cell proliferation
- Lipid accumulation
Endothelial dysfunction
Some level of loss or damage to the endothelium of the arteries
Accumulation of lipoproteins
Lipoproteins accumulate –> LDL gets oxidized
Monocyte adhesions
Monocytes move into the intima –> transforms into Macrophages –> Foam Cells
Foam Cells
Macrophages full of lipids
Factor release
Activated platelets
Macrophages
Inflammatory mediators
Cytokines
Smooth muscle proliferation
smooth muscle cells migration/proliferation into the intima (normally in media)
Deposition of extracellular matrix: elastin & collagen
Lipid accumulation
continued accumulation of lipids both extracellularly and within macrophages and smooth muscle cells
