A

The aircraft has two transponders, only one operates at a time.

What is the range of TCAS?

A

Limited to a maximum range of 30 NM on either side of the A/C and 30-80 NM longitudinally with a maximum altitude range of 9,900’ above and below.

An intruder that is outside the range of the display will show half of the symbol at the edge of the display.

What are the types of TCAS intruders?

A
  • Other - No collision threat, black diamond
  • Proximate - Within 6 NM and 1200’, white diamond
  • Traffic Advisory - Aural alert, 40 seconds, amber circle
  • Resolution Advisory - Aural alert, 25 seconds, red square. CLEAR OF CONFLICT when no longer a threat

  • A single channel TCAS computer
  • Two TCAS antennas (one above and one below)
  • Two mode S ATC transponders (one active and one standby)

When is TCAS intruder information displayed on the NDs?

A

Intruder information is displayed on both NDs and in all modes except PLAN when the range is set to 40 NM or less. Only the 8 most threatening aircraft are displayed. A vertical trend arrow only appears if the intruder’s vertical speed is greater than 500 FPM. If the bearing of an intruder cannot be determined, the NDs display other information as appropriate at the bottom of the ND.

TCAS Inhibits:
* Below 1700 AGL: All intruders below 380’ are inhibited
* Below 1100 AGL during climb and 900 AGL during descent: All RAs are converted into TAs
* Below 1100 AGL: Descent RAs are inhibited
* Below 1550 AGL: Increase Descent RAs are inhibited
* Below 600 AGL during climb and 400 AGL during descent: All TA aural alerts

What is the purpose of the TA ONLY selection on the transponder?

A

TA ONLY - RAs are converted to TAs, used during certain abnormal procedures where performance is degraded.

TA ONLY can also be automatically be activated if:
* The windshear alert is triggered
* The stall warning is triggered
* GPWS alerts are triggered
* Aircraft is below 1,000 ft AGL

What is the purpose of the ABV/N/BLW selector?

A

The Traffic Selector allows traffic to be displayed at a greater range above or below the aircraft.
* N - 2700 above and below
* ABV - 2700 below to 7000 above
* BLW - 2700 above to 7000 below
