Ataxic Dysarthria Intervention Flashcards
What is the aim for ataxic dysarthria intervention?
Intervention focuses on speech production e.g. timing etc. rather than dysfunction of specific components of the speech mechanism.
Directed to overall control and integration od speech movements rather than specific impairment.
Prosody Intervention- what is the pattern of focus?
- Focus on decreasing rate.
2. develop stress and intonation patterns to effect greater speech naturalness.
Rate altering techniques
rate control using an alphabet board.
Pacing board.
Metronome.
Biofeedback using oscillographic display.
Establish optimum speaking rate while maximizing intelligibility.
Encourage self-monitoring.
Stress and intonation techniques
lengthen syllable for stressed syllable.
Contrastive stress and intonation drills.
Utterances grouped into meaningful units.
What is targeted in terms of articulation?
Imprecise consonant production
Distortion of vowels
Articulation techniques.
Intensive phoneme drills with emphasis on rhythm and exaggeration of movements- start simple e.g. CVC…
Biofeedback may also be useful.
Respiration
Normally okay- may work on coordination with breathing and voicing.
Phonation- aim and techniques
Aim- stabilising pitch
Pitch drills focus on simple consonant vowel syllables
Aim- stabilising pitch
Do the same CV syllabless.
Use visipitch :)
Resonance- what’s the problem?
Its in relation to articulation gestures rather than soft palate muscle weakness.
Resonance therapy activity
articulation drills- alternate between nasal to non-nasal consonants.
Contrastive drills to differentiate between nasal and non-nasal sounds.
