Asystole Flashcards
What is seen on ECG?
No QRS
P waves may persist
How do you treat asystole?
Non-shockable
Adrenline 1 mg iv ASAP and every 3-5 minutes afterwards
How does adrenaline stimulate relaxation?
Stimulates beta-1-arenoceptors Adenylyl cyclase (convert cAMP to ATP) cAMP increases protein kinase A - increase contractile protein sensitivity to calcium + phosphorylation of phospholamban Increase pumping of Ca into SR Increase rate of relaxation
What is the effect of adrenaline on the heart?
Increase force, rate and cardiac output and O2 consumption
Decrease cardiac efficiency (O2 consumption > cardiac work)
What are side effects of adrenaline?
Can cause arrythmias
How is adrenaline administered?
IM/SC bolus
IV infusion
Adrenaline has
(a) short
(b) long
half life?
Short
Why and how is adrenaline given in acute cardiac arrest?
IV due to positive info/chronotropic actions (b1), redistribution of blood (a1) to the heart and dilation of coronary arteries (b2 on smooth muscle)
