1940’s = Jewish

70’s = South/South East Asia
90’s USSR related stuff, Afghanistan, Iraq, Rwanda
2000’s = Syria, Afghanistan, South Sudan and Myanmar
What 3 solutions are there for refugee populations?
1) Voluntary repatriation
2) Integration in new country
3) Re-settlement in 3rd country
What is human smuggling?
migrants who enter a contract voluntarily to transport them to the destination illegally
What is Human trafficking?
movement of migrants to destination illegally using violence, deception, coercion
What did Koser (2007) argue?
- Migration is a business, migrants can have leverage
- ‘Migration industry’ = social networks that perpetuate migration
How many refugees were there worldwide in 2005? According to whom?
UNDP
8.4 million refugees worldwide
What dis the problem with the UN definition of asylum seekers?
Doesn’t cover:
1) IDP’s
2) DP’s relating to sexuality
3) Environmental displacement
What is state sovereignty?
government has a sovereign right to control their borders

Irregular migration has risen because of legal routes into Europe closing

A significant amount of actors died attempting to get there for job security
