Astronomy Exam Flashcards
What is orbital radius?
the average distance between an object in the solar system and the sun
Gravitational Force
the force of attraction between all masses (planets, etc) in the universe
What did Claudius Ptolemy believe?
That the sun and planets revolved around Earth
astronomy
the scientific study of what is beyond earth
Solstice
astronomical event, happpens twice a year. when the North Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun/away from the Sun.

Wanes
the moons face decreases in size
Solar Eclipse
when the moon is in between the earth and the sun
Lunar Eclipse
when the earth is in between the moon and the sun
Tides
the rising and falling of the ocean surface caused by gravitational pull.
celestial object
any object that exists in space
universe
everything that exists, including all energy, matter, and space.
Constellation
a group of stars observed from earth
Star Map
a map of the night sky used to show the positions of stars at given times and dates.
Planisphere
a type of star map used for locating stars, galaxies, constellations as well as the postions of starts at given times and dates.
Celestial Sphere
an imaginary sphere which all celestial objects are projected.
Celestial Equator
an imaginary extension of earths equator, projected into space.
Planetarium
a place to study planets, stars, galaxies etc.
star
a massive collection of gases, held together by its own gravity and emits huge amounts of energy.
