- Atopy (eczema, hay fever)
- Family history
- Smoking
- Environmental exposures (air pollution, formaldehyde, dust mites, cockroaches, animal dander, mould)
- Hygiene hypothesis

A
- Allergies (pollen, dust, pet dander, etc)
- Viral infections
- Cold air
- Stress
- Medications (beta blockers, aspirin, NSAIDs, ACE inhibitors)

Symptoms of asthma (4)
A
- Wheeze
- SOB
- Chest tightness
- Cough - may produce purulent sputum (eosinophils)
Symptoms are usually worse at night/early morning or in response to exercise or cold air

Investigations for asthma
A
- Spirometry
- FEV1 12% and >200mL bronchodilator response in FEV1 or FVC
- Mannitol/methacholine challenge - Peak expiratory flow rates
- >20% variability 3/7 days
- >20% increase with bronchodilator
- >20% decrease with trigger exposure

A
Shortness of breath plus ONE of:
- Diurnal variability
- Reversibility
- Inducibility

Management of asthma
A
- SABA
- Add low dose ICS
- Add LABA combined with ICS
- Increase dosages
- Oral corticosteroids
- Tiotropium bromide
Others: leukotriene antagonists
