How do you use a metered dose inhaler?

A
  1. Cap should be removed and inhaler shaken
  2. Patient breathe out fully
  3. Wrap lips around inhaler mouthpiece, Patient should breath in slowly and steadily and press down on the inhaler device
  4. On inhalation, patient should hold their breath for a count of ten
  5. Patient should slowly breath out, replace mouthpiece cover and clean device if necessary

How to use dry powder inhaler?

A
  1. Cap should be removed and inhaler shaken
  2. Tilt head back slightly when using inhaler
  3. Mouth should form a tight seal around the inhaler mouthpiece, patient should breath out fully and do a quick and deep inhalation
  4. Then after inhalation hold breath for 10 seconds
  5. Patient should slowly breath out, clean or replace mouthpiece if necessary

Recommended management for COPD

A
  • Better to give up completely than gradually cut down smoking
  • Vaping could be better, not treatment provided by healthcare but patient could aid them to stop
  • Nicotine replacement therapy e.g patches, gum, lozenges, inhalators, mouth and nasal sprays
  • Stop smoking tablets: varenicline (champix) or bupropion (zyban)
  • Emergency number for out of hours times to help you cope with cravings and avoid lighting up if youre struggling
