What are the three stages of labour?
Uterine contraction
Foetus expelled
Foetal membranes/placenta expelled
In some species, stage 2 and 3 of labour are difficult to distinguish. What are these species called?
Polytocous
What are the signs of the first stages of labour?
Isolation, restlessness, uneasiness, straining, presence of water bag
What is happening during the first stage of labour?
Cervix dilates and foetus moves into position
After the water bag, how long roughly until the foetus is expelled?
30 mins to 1 hour
When should you intervene with parturition?
Nasty discharge Multiple foetuses Prolapse Abnormal disposition More than 30 minutes between lambs More than 1 hour with no progress of start of labour Ewe exhausted/unwell Ring womb Neglected dystocia
What is the first stool of an infant called?
Meconium
What are the 4 ways of describing the foetus disposition?
Longitudinal or transverse
Anterior or posterior
Dorsal, ventral or lateral
Flexed or extended head/limbs
What is the normal foetal disposition?
Longitudinal dorsal anterior
What should you do after the foetus is expelled?
Check lamb is breathing Check mother for more lambs/damage Ballot the abdomen Treat umbilical cord with iodine solution Check milk is coming down Make sure lamb feeds colostrum
How much colostrum should a lamb intake in the first 24 hours of its life?
200ml/kg
How long does it take between stage 2 and 3 of labour?
2-3 hours
When using a snare, where should the snare go?
Close to but not inside the mouth
Rope over the back of the ears
Before examining a vagina, what must you do?
Wash hands
Put gloves on
Lubricate
What is ring womb?
Cervix of ewe doesn’t relax
