Assessments Flashcards
What is Assessment?
Umbrella Term: all of the processes involved in gathering information and making decisions about learners’ progress
What is a Diagnosis?
assessment to provide teachers with information about students’ prior knowledge and misconceptions before the activity
Matching
-more answers/questions-clear directions-set answers that can be used more than once
What is the target?
complex learning outcomes/high level thinking
Characteristics of a good Motivation?
-aligned with learning objectives -focus on content mastery and improvement -avoid social comparisons -measure higher level learning -include detailed feedback
Multiple Choice (10)
1) one clear stem2) all distractors plausible to those who guess3) vary postion of correct answer4) avoid similar stem/key wording5) avoid technical wording with key6) key and distractor similar length7) avoid absolute terms8) stem and distractors grammatically correct9) avoid two distractors w/ same meaning10) emphasize negative wording with different styles11) avoid ‘all of the above’, use ‘none’ with care
What is compensatory scoring?
allow good/bad sections to compensate for another (help/hurt)
How to aid Self-Regulation?
make expectations clear, emphasize that assessments are designed to increase learning, making everything aligned, and provide feedback
Fill in the Blank (w/bank)
-answers have constraints-if written then answer taken out, make sure only that answer fits back in
What is non-compensatory scoring?
-either get it or not-want specific things out of learners-easier to grade
What does assessment provide?
provides students, teachers, parents, and school leaders track achievement
True/False
If false, learner can’t show what they know. Have them explain why it’s false
What is Measurement?
process of gathering information: commonly thought of as numeric indicators of the quantity or attainment
Rank Order- Problem/Solution
1 misconception throws off other answers/ write as multi choice for which group order is right
What is validity asking for?
Does it measure what it’s supposed to measure? [Accuracy]
What is reliability asking for?
Can it measure its consistently? [Consistency]
Can be ________ wrong. [Fill in the Blank]
Reliably
Cannot be _______ if there is no _______. [FitB]
valid; reliability
What is Informal Assessment? [Key Word]
can pick up general idea of what learner’s know by body language/questions in class [Incidental]
Problems with informal assessment?
-not systematic, not the same for all -reliability decreased
What is Formal Assessment?
test/projects; same information but doesn’t have to be standardized
Types of Assessment
Objective and Subjective
What are objective Assessments?
one right answer/ limited set of right answers/ no gray area
What are subjective Assessments?
many right answers/ ways to complete the task/ a lot of judgement in grading process
Forms of Objective Assessments
-multiple choice -open ended* -true/false -matching -fill in the blank
Forms of Subjective Assessments
-open ended* -essays -presentations -pictures -labs
