Formative and Summative Assessments
What is a Portfolio assessment?
process of selecting collections of student work that both you and your students evaluate using preset criteria
What is the purpose of Portfolio assessments?
show improvement in knowledge and skills
If the content area is math what are some portfolio samples?
homework, quizzes, tests, and projects completed over time
If the content area is writing what are some portfolio samples?
drafts of narratives, descriptive and persuasive essays, in various stages of development, samples of poetry
If the content area is art what are some portfolio samples?
projects over the course of the year collected to show growth in an area perspective or medium in painting
If the content area is science what are some portfolio samples?
lab reports, projects, classroom notes, quizzes, tests
What is a Formative Evaluation?
‘forming’ instruction through pretests, in-class questions/activities
What is the purpose of Formative Evaluation?
making judgements about student progress and instructional needs
What is a Summative Evaluation?
‘summarizing’ student achievement
What is the purpose of Summative Evaluation?
making judgements about how well students have learned what they were taught
What is criterion?
- the cut-off score for criteria judged
- sets the standard of what’s acceptable
- based on what you think they can do/know
What is norm-referencing?
comparing one’s score to everyone else
What is the measure of central tendency?
mean, median, mode
What is the range?
number of points between the highest and lowest points
What is the Standard Deviation?
average distance of the scores from the mean
