Q

What significant events in History have caused a change in the religious landscape of Australia?

A
  • Up until the passing of the Acts, the Catholic Church, alongside other Christian denominations, had run its own system of primary schools, financially supported by the government. There was resentment of this situation in many sectors of the community, and bitterness and suspicion of Catholics and their schools. The Church of England (Anglican Church) aspired to be the official Church in Australia, and other tensions arose between various Protestant denominations. Catholics, most of them Irish, were seen as interlopers, almost tribal in their loyalty to each other and their Church. Many of them were the descendants of convicts who had been deported to Australia for their opposition to British rule in Ireland. They were seen as dangerous radicals by many in the government and in the Protestant Churches. One of the factors that led to the Education Acts was suspicion of Catholics and their schools in the Australian community.
  • The discriminative White Australia Policy restricted migrants to only be from white, English speaking backgrounds. This meant that the Catholic Church was thriving but very Irish.
After the abolishment of the White Australia Policy, Australia also began to accept South East Asian refugees who were escaping political turmoil in their homelands.

Q

Why did the Italians migrate to Australia during the World War 2?

A

The italians came to australia because during world war 2 many italian towns were bombed and completely destroyed. When the soldiers returned home, they had nowhere to live or work. Luckily the Australian government helped thousands of Italians migrate here under the ‘Displaced Person Scheme’, which was part of its populate campaign. It arranged transport, accommodation and employment for the migrants.

Q

What challenges did the Italians face after they had migrated to Australia?

A

Because the italian migrants couldn’t speak fluent english, one man decided to help the new italian migrants, who were arriving by setting up an employment agency. He provided the language training courses, because migrants needed basic English skills before they were given jobs. His younger brother was a lawyer and helped them with Visas and become Australian citizens and also setting up new businesses and buying homes.

Q

What is the influence of the Catholic Church in society?

A

The Catholic Church is a major provider of social welfare services in Australian society.
The Church can support people who are going through difficulties, whatever background they may come from. Often the Church will seek to work with other religious groups to help keep peace and harmony in the community as religious leaders still have some influence in the areas that they work in. For example, Catholic Care helps people in need.
