Outline the purpose of the Education Acts:
In 1873 the state governments passed a series of Education Acts. Education for all children was now to be free, compulsory and secular.
The Catholics were very clear about the purpose of their schools:
→ teach their children the true faith
→ to enable their children to take that faith into all walks of Australian life.

Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice, was a Roman Catholic missionary and educationalist.

What is Edmund Rice known for?
- Edmund was the founder of two religious institutes of religious brothers: the Congregation of Christian Brothers and the Presentation Brothers.
- In 1802 he set up a free school for boys living in poverty.
- His aim was to promote an education that recognised the dignity of each individual and gave them an education
- which would help them to rise from the poverty and hopelessness that they were trapped in.
