Assessment Of The Periodontal Patient Flashcards
What kind of questions would you ask a patient presenting with periodontal disease?
Bleeding on brushing? Spacing/drifting of teeth? Mobility of teeth? Gum recession? Sensitivity?
What are the periodontal indices that need to be recorded on a periodontal exam?
Plaque index, periodontal pocket depths, bleeding on probing, mobility, gingival recession, presence of furcation defects
What is the plaque index?
Method of recording plaque on individual tooth surfaces
How do you determine plaque score?
Number of surfaces exhibiting plaque over the number of available surfaces x 100
Name two kinds of probes you can use for probing pocket depth.
Michigan-O probe with William’s markings or WHO-621 periodontal probe
What are the two measurements of periodontal disease?
Probing pocket depth and clinical attachment loss
Where does the probing pocket depth measure from?
The gingival margin to the base of the pocket
Where does the clinical attachment loss measure from?
The CEJ to the base of the pocket
What does it mean if CAL>PPD?
Gingival recession
What does it mean if PPD>CAL?
Gingival swelling
What is a sign used to show that the periodontal disease is stable?
No bleeding on probing
What is bleeding on probing a sign of?
Inflammation in the tissues- ulcerated pocket epithelium, increased vascularisation of connective tissue
What is Miller’s index used to measure?
Mobility
What does a Miller’s index of 0 mean?
No mobility or physiological movement
What does a Miller’s index of 1 mean?
Buccal-lingual movement less than or equal to 1mm
What does Miller’s index of 2 mean?
Buccal-lingual movement greater than or equal to 1mm
What does a Miller’s index of 3 mean?
Buccal-lingual movement greater than or equal to 1mm and vertical movement
What are the sites assessed in 6 point charting?
Ditto-buccal, mid-buccal, mesic-buccal, disto-palatal/lingual, mid-palatal/lingual, mesio-palatal/lingual
What does it mean when one of the areas in a 6 point charting is highlighted?
There is bleeding on probing
What does ALARP mean?
As low as reasonably practicable
What radiographs would you take for someone with generalised/advanced periodontal disease?
OPT plus anterior IOPAs
What radiographs would you take for someone with generalised mild periodontal disease?
Bite-wings plus anterior IOPAs
What radiographs would you take for someone with localised advanced periodontal disease?
IOPAs
