Assessment of Manual Tasks in Industry Flashcards
What’s the scope of ergonomics?
- Physical Ergonomics (Bio)
- Cognitive Ergonomics (Psycho)
- Organisation Ergonomics (Social)
Most common causes of MSD’s at work?
- slips/trips/falls
- hit by object
- manual tasks
What’s the most common workplace injury?
MSK disorders!
What’s a manual task?
Task that requires person to lift, lower, push, pull, carry or otherwise move, hold, restrain any person, animal or thing.
What are hazardous manual tasks?
Involve:
- repetitive or sustained force
- high or sudden force
- repetitive mvt
- sustained/awkward posture
- exposure to vibration
What’s a repetitive force?
more than 2x/min
What’s a sustained force?
held for more than 30s at a time
How do we assess effort?
Borg scale of perceived exertion
How do we measure push/pull force?
strain gauge
Measure grip force?
dynamometer
Repetitive mvts for shoulder?
> 2.5/min
Repetitive mvts for upper arm, elbow, forearm, wrist?
> 10/min
Repetitive mvts for fingers?
> 200/min
What’s a sustained posture?
> 30mins at a time
What’s an awkward posture?
When body parts are unbalanced, asymmetrical or at extreme ranges (further away a joint moves from neutral = more awkward the posture becomes)
