Branch of linguistics that studies word meanings and word combinations. Simple, complex, multiple, abstract. Referential, connotative, figurative..
What are a few semantic relations?

What are the first types of words learned in semantics?
General nominals, then specific nominals, then actions, modifiers, personal social.
What are semantic skills seen in older children?
Comprehension and production or figurative language, abstract language, advanced conversations…
What is a morpheme? Bound? Free? Derivational? Inflectional?
Smallest element of grammar and meaning. Bound can’t convey meaning on own, free can. Derivational meaning of speech is changed, inflectional not necessarily (always grammatical/productive)
What are syntactic skills? When are they usually acquired? How are they assessed?
Rules of grammar and sentence construction. First grade. Standardized tests, lang samples, alt approaches w/ ethnocultural validity.
What are pragmatic skills? What does it include?
Study of language in social contexts. Narration, conversation.
What are verbal pragmatic skills? Nonverbal?
Topic initiating, turn taking, topic maint, appropriate speech
eye contact, distance, gestures, expressions
When do pragmatic skills develop? What are they influenced by?
Birth! Culture!
