Assessment of Hearing in the Pediatric Population Flashcards
Behavioral assessment is at :
B-6 Months
What is a behavioral response for an infant of B-6 months?
Response from the person
What is an Electrophysiologic response of an infant?
no active participation, and newborn can be assessed while sleeping ( and can be performed on anyone)
What are some Electrophysiologic tests? (3)
- Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) 2. Auditory Brain Stem Response Audiometry (ABR) 3. Acoustic Immitance Measurement
Should a test of hearing be based on one result?
no
What does an Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) test do?
Tests how an healthy cochlea hears and produces sound–. only suggests a healthy cochlea ( 90% pass rate)
What two tests are used together for screening?
- Otoacoustic Emissions and 2. Auditory Brainstem Response Audiometry (ABR)
Auditory Brainstem Response Audiometry (ABR)?
sound is put in ear to receive a response. Goes further than cochlea.
What does Auditory Brainstem Response Audiometry (ABR) test?
Tests auditory nerve and brain stem pathway
How is a Auditory Brainstem Response Audiometry (ABR) test administered?
electrodes placed on a baby’s skull, then record neuroelectrical activity that occurs when sound is in ears.
what does Auditory Steady-State Response (ASSR) do?
Differentiates between severe/ profound hearing loss
What is Acoustic Immitance Testing?
Test ME function: Tympanometry- shows if you have punctured ear drum or ear infection 2. Acoustic Reflex Testing: involves recording of the stapedius muscle activity
