What things are involved in assessing someone’s mental health?
Holistic approach (tree approach), milieu and setting up the environment, age, language, cultural considerations, review of systems, lab data, mental status exam (MSE), psychosocial assessment, self-awareness, validating the assessment .
Analogous to the physical examination in general medicine. Fundamental to overall pt assessment, collects and organizes objective data. The purpose is to evaluate the current cognitive process.
Mental Status Examination (MSE)
Personal information, physical appearance, behavior, speech, affect and mood, thought process/content, perceptual disturbances, cognitive and intellectual abilities.

What is what the client says it is?
What is what we see on their face and in the way they carry themselves?
Mood
Affect
A pt’s comprehension of the nature and causes of his/her problems. Awareness to recognition that they have an illness.
Insight
The ability to appreciate the benefit of treatment. To recognize and define unusual thoughts and perceptions as signs of illness.
Types of voices?
Commentary, accusatory, threatening, command
Outcome criteria/goal-setting must be what?
Evidence based, individualized, appropriate, safe
What makes up the limbic system, or “emotional brain”?
Hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus, hypothalamus
