Assessment 1: Class 7 Flashcards
1
Q
What are Protooncogenes?
A
A normal gene which, when altered by mutation, becomes an oncogene that can contribute to cancer
2
Q
What are Oncogenes?
A
- A mutant gene that pushes the cell cycle
- Often favors cell division effect
3
Q
What are Phosphates?
A
A large chemical group with a negative charge
4
Q
How do you turn off a kinase?
A
Take away the phosphate
5
Q
What do “gain of function” mutations do?
A
- “On” all the time
- Push cell division
6
Q
What is the issue with targeting Raf/Ras/etc to prevent cancer?
A
Although targeting these kinase seem like the best way to stop cancer, this method has too great of an effect on regular cells. Often too toxic.
