A

An American destroyer (The US Maddox) was attacked by three North Vietnamese torpedo boats
The Maddox fired warning shots which lead to all ships being damaged

A

Congress passing the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution which gave Johnson an excuse to justify sending marines into Vietnam in March 1965

A

The resolution granted President Johnson broad war-making powers that allowed him to escalate U.S. involment in the Vietnam War.

A

Lead to civillians remaining loyal and offering food and shelter to VC whilst also betraying Americans
170,000 VC troops in SV so help was often needed
However, some actions lead to some SV hating VC and decreasing support

Used small firearms which lead to 51% of US casualties in small arms
Booby traps lowered morale and accounted for 11% of casualties

A

US couldn’t attack some of it as some was in Laos and Cambodia
Allowed VC to retrea to those countries without being pursued
40,000 people helped bring aid and weapons
However, supplies could be disrupted and bombing meant VC troops were left without supplies for prolonged periods
