Asexual reproduction Flashcards
What is Asexual Reproduction
-Form of reproduction needing only one parent
-All offspring are genetically identical to each other and the parent
-Can produce large numbers of offspring very rapidly
Binary Fission
-Simplest form of asexual reproduction
-parent splits into two equal cells
-No Parent cell remains
-Occurs in bacteria, amoebas, paramecium
Budding
-Parent divides into two unequal parts
-New offspring grow out of the body of the parent
-parent remains
-Occurs in yeast, hydra and sea sponges
Spore formation
-Small spores are formed in large amounts
-Small spores contain cytoplasm and genetic information
-Surrounded by tough outer coat for protection
-Occurs in bacteria, yeast, molds, mushrooms, ferns
Regeneration
ability to regrow lost body parts
-development of a new organism from a part of the original organism
-Occurs in Hydra, Planaria, sea stars, earthworms
Parthenogenesis
Process where an unfertilized female egg develops into a new individual
-Examples: Some sharks, bees, Komodo dragon
