Asch's research Flashcards
procedure
- 123 male students, 6-8 confederates, lines, confederates correct then all wrong, 18 trials,
12 critical -lots wrong answers
findings
- 36.8% wrong, conformed even when unambiguous,
- 75% conform at least once, to avoid rejection, privately disagree (compliance)
groups size
1 confed = 1.15% conformity, 2= 13.6%, 3 = 31.8%, 4 = no difference
unanimity
truthful confederate or inaccurate dissenter, 25% wrong answers, conformity reduced
Task Difficulty
tasks harder becuase lines more similar, ISI becuase of ambiguity
negative evaluation
child of the time
Perrin, conform response, over 300 trials, students more confident in their answers
- 50’s were more conformst time, Asch effect not consistnrt
negative evaluation
tasks artificial
figured out the stdudy, demand characteristcs, trivial, no reson to cofnrom, not normal groups, findings not generalised, no consequences of their choice of conformign behavior (like on jury duty)
negative evaluation
applys to certain groups - women conform
men tested, Neto says women more confmist (more concerned with social aspect),
US individualist, confomity higher in collectivist, findings limited to US men
negative evaluation
ethical issues - deception
deceptions (participants didn’t know confederates) consider ethics vs benefits,
highlights susceptibility to conformity and variables
