To investigate the effect of the incorrect answers on an individual to see if he imitates the wrong answers
what was the proceedure of Asch’s line Test (1951)
Participants were shown lines and had to say which was closest in lenght to a presnted line. There were several confederates in room who all gave wrong answers and if patricipant gave correct answer, confederates would look at participants weirdly. Difficulty of task gradually increased but confederates kept giving wrong answers to see if participant would conform to the group/majority.
what were the findings of Asch’s line test (1951)
Native participants gave a wrong answer 36.8% of the time. Overall 25% of participants did not confform on any questions, which means 75% conformeed at least once. Participants knew answers were wrong but wanted to fit in with the group. (compliance)
