Ascending Tracts Flashcards
What information does the anterior spinothalamic tract convey?
Crude touch and pressure sensation
What kind of information does the lateral spinothalamic tract convey?
Pain, temperature, tickle, itch and sexual sensation
What kind of sensation does the spinothalamic tract convey?
Protopathic sensation
What are the receptors of the lateral spinothalamic tract?
Free nerve endings in the skin
What kind of pain does the delta A fibers transmit?
The delta A fibers are fast-conducting fibers that convey initial, sharp pain.
What kind of pain does the C-fibers transmit?
The C-fibers are slow-conducting and convey prolonged burning, aching pain
Where is the 1st neuron of the spinothalamic tract located?
Dorsal root ganglion
Does the spinothalamic tract decussate? If it does where?
Yes (both anterior and latera)
At the level of the spinal segment in the anterior white commissure.
Where is the second neuron of the spinothalamic tract?
In the posterior horn of the spinal cord. Laminae I, V, VII, VIII (including cells of the substantia gelatinosa)
Which tracts form the spinal lemniscus?
Spinothalamic tract (lateral and anterior) and spinotectal tract
Where does the spinal lemniscus lie in the midbrain?
In the tegmentum, lateral to the medial lemniscus
Where is the 3rd neuron of the spinothalamic tract?
In the VPL nucleus of the thalamus
Where does the axons of the 3rd neuron of the spinothalamic tract end?
Primary somatosensory cortex (brodmann areas 3, 1 and 2)
In which funiculus does the anterior spinothalamic tract run in?
Anterolateral funiculus
In which funiculus does the lateral spinothalamic tract run?
Anterolateral funiculus
