Ascending sensory pathways 2 Flashcards
What is the main nerve carrying sensation from the head?
Trigeminal nerve
What are the three branches of the trigeminal nerve?
ophthalmic
maxillary
mandibular
What are the two modalities carried within the trigeminothalamic tract?
- essential to survival
2. increase in detail
where are cranial nerve nuclei located?
in the brainstem
Which four cranial nerves is general sensation of the head carried in?
Trigeminal (5)
Facial (7)
Glossopharyngeal (9)
Vagus (10)
which central pathway do cranial nerves 5,7,9 and 10 travel in?
Trigeminothalamic
How many parts does a trigeminal nucleus have?
3
What are the three parts to the trigeminal nucleus?
Mesencephalic
Pontine (chief principle)
Spinal
Where is the mesencephalic nucleus located?
Midbrain (cerebellar peduncles)
Where is the pontine nucleus located?
pons
Where is the spinal nucleus located?
Medulla
Which nucleus receives pain and temperature modalities?
Spinal nucleus - caudal part
Which sensory modalities does the rostral part of the spinal nucleus receive?
Simple touch and pressure
In the pain and temp pathway where does the first neurone pass in to?
The pons
In the pain and temp pathway where is the cell body?
In the trigeminal ganglion
What happens to the primary fibres in the spinal tract of the pain and temp pathway?
They descend in the spinal tract, adjacent to the spinal nucleus
Where do the primary fibres enter the spinal nucleus in the pain and temp pathway?
The caudal pole of the spinal nucleus
In the pain and temp pathway, where does the primary neurone synapse with the secondary neurone?
In the caudal part of the spinal nucleus
What does the second neurone do in the pain and temp pathway?
Crosses the midline and ascends to the thalamus
What tract does the secondary neurone travel in?
The Trigeminothalamic tract
In the touch and pressure pathway where does the primary neurone enter the nucleus?
Spinal nucleus - Rostral end
Where does the primary neurone synapse with the secondary neurone in the touch and pressure pathway?
In the rostral end of the spinal nucleus
which artery runs near the cerebellarpontine angle?
The anterior inferior cerebellar artery
In the discriminatory touch pathway where does the cell body lie?
In the trigeminal ganglion (outside the brainstem)
Where does the primary neurone of the discriminatory touch pathway enter the brainstem?
Into the pons - then straight into the pontine nucleus
Where does the primary neurone of the discriminatory touch pathway enter the nucleus?
At the pontine nucleus straight away, it does not descend
Which tract does the secondary neurone of the discriminatory touch pathway ascend in?
The trigeminothalamic tract to the thalamus
Which pathway has its cell bodies of primary neurone in the brainstem?
Proprioception pathway
Where is the cell bodies of primary neurones in the proprioception pathway?
In the mesencephalic nucleus - in the midbrain
Where does the primary neurone synapse with the secondary neurone in the proprioception pathway?
Outside the mesencephalic nucleus - adjacent to it in the pons
Which tract does the secondary neurone of the proprioception pathway travel in?
The trigeminothalamic tract
