Ascending and Descending Tracts Flashcards
spinal cord anatomy
what shape is the cervical spine and what does it contain
- Large triangular vertebral canal
- Contains the spinal cord with large numbers of ascending and descending neural tracts which carry information to and from the whole of the body
spinal cord anatomy
what shape is the thoracic spine and what does it contain
- Smaller triangular vertebral canal
- Contains the spinal cord with ascending and descending neural tracts which carry information to and from the trunk, pelvic region and lower limbs
spinal cord anatomy
What does the lumbar spine contain
- Contains the cauda equina with ascending and descending neural tracts which carry information to and from the pelvic region and lower limbs
spinal cord anatomy
what does the Sacral spine contain
- Contains the cauda equina with neurons supplying the pelvic region and lower limbs
spinal nerves
what do spinal nerves contain?
contain somatic sensory, motor and autonomic nerves
spinal nerves: supply
what is a dermatome
area of skin supplied by the sensory nerve fibres of a particular spinal nerve
spinal nerves: supply
what is a myotome
the motor axons of individual spinal nerves that innervate anatomically and functionally related groups of skeletal muscles
spinal cord: origin of spinal nerves
when does the spinal cord terminate?
terminates at the L1-2 region
spinal corsd: origin of spinal nerves
how do the cervical spinal nerves go through the vetebrae
over the vertebral bones
somatic nervous system
what does the somatic nervous system do
- voluntary control of peripheral motor system
- innervates and commands skeletal muscle fibres
autonomic nervous system
what does the autonomic nervous system do
- controls involuntary processes
- maintains homeostasis of internal environment
- rgulates internal (visceral) organs, smooth muscle and secretory glands
