ASA Ch 1 Flashcards
Chord line
A straight line from the leading edge to the trailing edge of an airfoil
Airfoil
A structure or body which produces a useful reaction to air movement
Relative wind
The wind felt by an airfoil, created by the movement of air past the airfoil, by the motion of the airfoil through the air, or by a combination of the two
Angle of attack
The angle between the chord line of the airfoil and the relative wind
Angle of incidence
The angle at which a wing is attached to the fuselage
Lateral axis
A line from wingtip to wingtip
Pitch
Rotation around the lateral axis
Longitudinal control
Control of pitch, aka longitudinal stability
Longitudinal axis
A line from nose to tail
Roll
Rotation around the longitudinal axis
Lateral control
Control of roll, aka lateral stability
Vertical axis
A line extending vertically through the intersection of the lateral and longitudinal axes
Yaw
Rotation around the vertical axis
Directional control
Control of yaw, aka directional stability
Center of gravity
The point at which an airplane would balance if it were suspended at that point, and the intersection of the lateral, longitudinal, and vertical axes
Weight
The downward-acting force of gravity
Lift
The upward-acting force which allows the airplane to become airborne
Drag
The rearward-acting force which resists the plane’s forward movement
Thrust
The forward-acting force created by the propeller
Bernoulli’s Principle
As the velocity of a fluid increases, its pressure decreases
Parasite drag
That portion of drag produced by the resistance of the air against any part of the plane that does not produce lift
Induced drag
Drag created as a by-product of lift
Stability
The inherent ability of an airplane to return (or not return) to its original flight condition after being disturbed by an outside force such as rough air
Positive static stability
The initial tendency of an aircraft to return or not return to its original position
